Even as smaller local film festivals such as the Las Vegas Jewish Film Festival and Boulder City’s Dam Short Film Festival expand, the biggest of all, CineVegas (owned by members of the Greenspun family, who also own Las Vegas Weekly’s parent company), is downsizing, reducing its 2009 edition from 10 days to six. Originally slated for June 11-20, CineVegas will run June 10-15, still at the Palms’ Brenden Theatres. According to festival spokesperson Kelly Frey, the move is primarily meant to avoid a mid-festival lull.
There are other factors at work, of course: “To say that we aren’t affected by the economy would be a total lie,” Frey admits, but says finances weren’t the main reason, and that the number of films is set to remain just about constant.
