Three and a half stars
ABC, Tuesdays, 8 p.m.

As fans learned over the course of four seasons of Heroes, it takes more than just badly copying storytelling devices from comic books to make a good superhero TV series. The creators of No Ordinary Family have a much better handle on how to meld the conventions of superhero comics with those of network TV, delivering a show that’s as much about family drama as it is about superpowered action. Creators Greg Berlanti and Jon Harmon Feldman don’t rush into convoluted back stories, epic battles or evil plots, but they also don’t hold back on hinting at a whole fantastical world beyond the central family who unexpectedly end up with amazing powers. Michael Chiklis and Julie Benz are warm and vulnerable as parents who are as unsure about marriage and family as they are about their new abilities, and the whole show has a welcome sense of discovery and wonder.
