At least the makers of romantic comedies have finally figured out that Kate Hudson is obnoxious and overbearing instead of cute and loveable and have started casting her accordingly. In Something Borrowed, Hudson plays Darcy, a self-centered extrovert who’s engaged to hunky lawyer Dex (Colin Egglesfield, personifying blandness). The problem is that Darcy’s best friend Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) has been secretly in love with Dex for years, and when Rachel and Dex give in to a moment of passion, suddenly things get very complicated. For alleged best friends, Rachel and Darcy treat each other pretty poorly, and the movie hinges on unsympathetic misunderstandings and betrayals. No matter how charming Goodwin may be, she can’t make up for the lame comedy and unlikable characterizations. Borrowed hints at a moral complexity beyond typical rom-com fare but ends up retreating into glossy, unpleasant superficiality—where Hudson fits in perfectly.
