In a meaningless (and arguably unconstitutional) concession for a small group of business owners, the Las Vegas City Council passed an ordinance last week that requires food trucks and open-air vendors operating on city streets to park at least 150 feet from any restaurant. The rule doesn’t apply to permitted events like First Friday or Vegas StrEATs, nor to authorized vendors on private property. So, what comes next? In recent months the mayor and council have spoken about creating special food truck-friendly zones, a concept that has flourished and complemented urban renewal in other cities. A food truck park would be low-maintenance and a natural fit Downtown. Of course, the city isn’t currently considering anything like that, but all it takes is a suggestion to get things rolling ...
