Key Largo Casino | March 28, 2013 | 3:21 P.M.
It was actually my day off. I was on my way to get a bite to eat when I saw the smoke as I passed through the intersection of Maryland Parkway and Flamingo Road. Whatever was on fire was huge. Traffic immediately tightened up, so I stuck to the side streets as I made my way toward the smoke, zigzagging with fire engines that were also en route. As I arrived, I could see flames shooting through the roof of the abandoned Key Largo Casino, and there were loud crashes as the weakened structure began crumbling. Pieces of the burnt building floated through the air as the wind began moving the smoke across the street toward the crowds of spectators gathered to watch. I shot these images with my iPhone and was able to have them up on the Las Vegas Sun website within minutes.
