Welcome to the big time
Another big Vegas weekend, another big group of concerts. But how can we possibly choose between seeing the Green Valley High School chorus at MGM Grand or the Las Vegas Academy chorus at Sunset Station … wait, what? Turns out the young Henderson singers will take the stage with The Rolling Stones, while LVA’s performers will sing with Foreigner, both on Saturday, May 11. No word yet on which local high school troupe will be collaborating with Kaskade at Marquee next week. –Brock Radke
Game (soon to be) over
There’s another new blackjack game in town. It’s called Double Attack, and I saw it at the El Cortez. Double-down on any two cards … or any three. Double before you get your cards, after the dealer shows you her face-up card. What’s the catch? No 10s in the deck. If you play with Perfect Strategy, the house edge is 0.62 percent. Not as good as normal blackjack, but not bad. Who’s going to memorize Perfect Strategy for Double Attack Blackjack? Nobody, because this game, like all other silly blackjack variations, will be gone in no time. –Rick Lax
One-tortoise policy
No good deed goes unpunished, it seems. Nevada’s long-standing policy of letting residents adopt the threatened desert tortoise species has resulted in an annual average of 1,000 unwanted “pets,” mostly due to over-breeding at home. So starting immediately, adoptions are limited to one per household. Here’s our stupid question: Why not just get rid of the adoption program altogether? It’s obviously caused more problems than it solved, and it’s currently illegal to touch, disturb or remove wild tortoises, anyway. Sounds like taking humans out of the equation is the real solution. –Ken Miller
