Education loses again?
As Nevada anxiously waits to find out whether it’s the future site of Tesla Motors’ $5 billion battery plant, Sen. Dean Heller this week decided to sweeten the deal by saying that a proposal to fund education by taxing corporations “wouldn’t be good for Nevada.” But what’s really bad for Nevada is its current education system. And as much as Nevada needs that plant and the 6,500 jobs it would bring, it’s sad that education continually gets shafted in favor of the almighty dollar.
Different state, same complaint
The porn business may be relocating to Nevada to escape California’s regulations, but it got a serious wake-up call from the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which filed a formal complaint July 25 with Nevada’s OSHA against San Francisco-based Kink.com for not using condoms in shoots. Kink.com’s CEO called the complaint baseless, but it’s worth noting that a similar complaint filed against the porn company in California resulted in a $78,000 fine. Welcome to Nevada, guys.
Judge and jury
Call it a moment of Zen for anyone who’s been stuck on jury duty: Nevada Supreme Court judge Mark Gibbons was picked for a jury in Carson District Court. The judge, who has overseen more than 150 trials, will be in court all this week to hear a criminal case. “It’s the first time it has ever happened to me, and I wanted to fully participate in the process,” says Gibbons. That means missing work, schlepping through metal detectors and fighting off sleep while the process unfolds. Who says life isn’t fair?
