R.I.P. TRL

Former TRL hosts Jesse Camp and Carson Daly.

MTV managed to pack Times Square one more time this past Sunday for the last episode of TRL, dubbed Total Finale Live, although nostalgia was pretty much the only reason for anyone to show up (well, that and self-promotion). Former hosts, including Carson Daly and, yes, Jesse Camp, made their appearances, as did four-fifths of the original Backstreet Boys, two-fifths of the original ’N Sync and three-fourths of Fall Out Boy. Christina Aguilera chatted with Daly via satellite, while Britney Spears was a no-show (her video for “… Baby One More Time” did top the meaningless “videos that defined TRL” countdown, though).

Other special guests included Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus, who were 8 and 5 years old, respectively, when TRL premiered in 1998. They’re now the voices of pop music, and seemed perfectly happy to bury their predecessors, if a little confused as to what all the fuss was about.
